Alfred puts pause on IWD

With residents and businesses across the region bracing for the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, Bureau of Meteorology warnings have put a dampener on plans for International Women’s Day in Beaudesert.

The Zonta IWD luncheon is a highlight on the social calendar but although it was due to take place on 7 March, the event has been postponed.

Zonta president Ellen Logan said the group was forced to make the call after hearing that schools would close down as Alfred approaches.

“We do have schools take part in our IWD lunch, so we wanted to make sure they could still come,” she said.

“Also many of the women who come to the lunch are always keeping an eye on the time as it gets close to pickup time.”

Ms Logan said there were also concerns about road conditions for people coming to Beaudesert from outside the district, including guest speaker Sascha Watson, who would be travelling from Canungra with family members.

To make sure all guests could make the IWD lunch, Zonta decided to reschedule the event to 21 March at The Club Beaudesert.

Zonta president Ellen Logan said the IWD luncheon always attracted a crowd of supporters and Zonta members had reached out to ticket holders in the hope that they can make it on 21 March.

“Every year I’m thrilled and amazed at the response we get from the Beaudesert ladies in particular,” she said.

“They come along and support us year in and year out. We’re really grateful for that.”

Ms Logan said the multi draw raffle would provide some spectacular prizes for winners to take home.
