After initially saying they could not reveal locations of refuge during the severe weather event predicted for the region, Scenic Rim Regional Council on 6 March nominated some sites where people could shelter if they are not safe at home.
Local Government Disaster Management Chair, Cr Steve Moriarty, posted a video on Council’s website saying facilities across the region would be opened as short-term refuge places to be opened only if required.
‘These places of refuge will be a short-term facility designed to protect people during the peak period of wind when Tropical Cyclone Alfred crosses the coast or crosses our region,” he said.
“These facilities are not cyclone rated … they may need to change or be moved at the very last minute but hopefully that won’t be the case.”
Cr Moriarty said the facilities would provide only the basic amenities and would not have beds. cooking facilities or catering provided.
Residents using a place of refuge were advised to bring only the things they might need for a potential two-day stay.
“Please bring non-perishable food and water,” Cr Moriarty said.
“The facility will be locked down at trigger points for example if the winds get too strong and if you are at the facility at this time you will need to be prepared to stay until authorities advise it is safe to leave.”
Council made it clear that animals would not be permitted in places of refuge.
Kooralbyn resident Janis Nicklas said she would rather take her chances at home than leave her dogs behind.
“I don’t know any responsible animal owner who would even consider doing something like that,” she said.
“They’re part of my family and I will protect them as much as I would any other member of my family. If they’re under control I don’t see why they couldn’t have shelter too – and what about service dogs? Will they be allowed in?”
