Services impacted ahead of cyclone

As Beaudesert supermarkets opened for business on 5 March, shoppers were lined up to buy supplies to see them through a predicted flood disaster.

It comes after three days of panic buying with water, bread, flour, milk eggs and fresh produce flying off the shelves as quickly as they can be restocked.

Cafes, restaurants, local transport services and schools also announced closures from 6 March until the cyclonic weather passes.

Scenic Rim Regional Council’s customer service centres were closed and garbage collection on Thursday and Friday postponed.

State schools across the region will also close, as will early education centres and Catholic schools.

McAuley College Principal Jason Pacey said the school had notified parents that schools would be closed on 6 and 7 March.

“The Queensland Government advice was for Scenic Rim schools to close Thursday and Friday, that came out about 11am and we communicated that to families via email and Facebook soon after,” he said.

“I went around and spoke to all the kids, told them to be safe and gave that message to them in person.”

With wild weather forecast across the weekend, Mr Pacey said he was unsure whether the school would reopen on Monday.

“We’ll make a decision once we can get in, have a look at the school and see what it all looks like on Sunday, assuming we can get in,” he said.

Meanwhile Transport and Main Roads has announced there would be no public transport services running from 6 March until further notice with road closures likely and motorists advised to avoid road travel.
